Auburn, Oregon in BCS Championship headline Arizona bowl lineup

by Jeff Metcalfe – Dec. 5, 2010 06:30 PM
The Arizona Republic | azcentral.com

When the dust cleared Sunday after bowl selections, Arizona emerged with one of the more-compelling championship games in the 13-year Bowl Championship Series history and a projected $420 million economic bonanza for metro Phoenix.

In addition to No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Oregon meeting in the BCS Championship Game on Jan. 10, No. 7 Oklahoma will play in the 40th Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 and No. 12 Missouri will be the highest-rated team ever in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 28.

Big East champion Connecticut, which will challenge Oklahoma in the Fiesta, just missed out on the Top 25 in the final BCS standings. Unranked Iowa will make its Arizona bowl debut against Missouri in the Insight, able to draw better teams because of increasing its combined payout to $6.5 million.

“It’s a wonderful display of college football,” Fiesta Bowl president John Junker said. “The matches are all intriguing. The national-championship game is a gigantic contest. The Insight has two very interesting teams that haven’t played much. And the Fiesta Bowl is the mystery game to see what Connecticut can do and how the Big East can play against a very physical Oklahoma team.

“They’re games we think will create tremendous interest.”

They also are expected to draw more than 190,000 to University of Phoenix and Sun Devil stadiums.

The Auburn-Oregon matchup was finalized Saturday when the Tigers dominated South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference title game and the Ducks beat Oregon State in the Civil War.

And the Fiesta pairing was set after Connecticut edged South Florida to clinch the Big East automatic BCS berth and Oklahoma rallied past Nebraska in the Big 12 title game.

That eliminated a possible Orange Bowl matchup of No. 13 Virginia Tech and West Virginia, sending No. 4 Stanford and UConn on cross-country journeys to the Orange and Fiesta instead of remaining closer to home.

So the only remaining drama in the Arizona selections was with the Insight, which had fourth pick among Big 12 teams and last year bypassed Missouri in favor of Iowa State. The Tigers got the nod this time over Nebraska, which fell five spots in the BCS rankings after losing 23-20 to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game.

“We have the two highest Big 12 teams (in the Fiesta and Insight),” Junker said. “Nebraska made a point about beating Missouri (31-17), yet you have to take in the whole body of work. We love everything about Nebraska, but it seemed pretty tough to turn down a 12th-ranked team as the highest-ranked team we’ve ever had.”

Junker believes the Auburn-Oregon game could be as memorable as BCS title games between Ohio State-Miami here in 2003 and Texas-USC at the 2005 Rose Bowl.

The unbeatens combined to average more than 92 points and 1,000 yards total offense per game and feature two of the top three Heisman Trophy candidates: favored Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and Oregon running back LaMichael James.

“You know, whether you’re in your second year or your 20th year, it’s just an extremely difficult game to get to,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said. “You can coach your whole life and never be involved in one of these.”

Chip Kelly also is in his second year as coach at Oregon and in his second BCS game. The Ducks lost 26-17 to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl last season.

“We didn’t intentionally lose the Rose Bowl so we could have fuel for the fire for this year, I can tell you that,” Kelly said. “Obviously, when the last game you play is a loss, there’s always going to be fuel for motivation in the off-season.”

Oklahoma will try to make up for losses to Boise State and West Virginia in the 2007 and ’08 Fiesta Bowls and improve its overall Fiesta record to 2-3.

“We realize the last two games out there we have not been successful so it’s motivation definitely,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. “We approach all our bowl games with a very serious demeanor in how we prepare in practice. Hopefully, when we get in the game, we’ll have a chance to play better and maintain the focus throughout the month leading up to it.”

UConn coach Randy Edsall is optimistic that Huskies’ fans will travel well for the school’s first BCS game.

“This is something new for Connecticut. I think our fans have really embraced our move to Division I (in 2000). They want to be able to experience the bowl game at the highest level.”

KPNX 12 News Discount Golf Card – 10 Rounds for $150

Comments Off on KPNX 12 News Discount Golf Card – 10 Rounds for $150 Golf, Nearby Things To Do, Uncategorized

Get 10 rounds of golf at 10 of the best courses in Phoenix plus other great offers for only $150. Channel 12 claims the golf discount card is worth $1000, but we beg to differ. The golf courses mostly mediocre, and would be hard pressed to get the $15 a round you’d be paying with this card considering their restrictions. Add in the fact that you would be driving over an hour to play at average courses because the courses are mostly on the extreme ends of the Valley, from Queen Creek to Laveen for example, and this discount card doesn’t seem to be that great. The 12 News Golf Card doesn’t even include a cart. Basically, any golfer can get close to these rates by playing off peak hours anyways. Be careful too, because you can’t even play with other card holders on most courses. We’d recommend not buying this card. If you disagree, let us know! We’d love to hear how you enjoyed your purchase.

If you appreciate our review, follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay informed on other deals, discounts, plus news related to Scottsdale vacations and golf. Just look us up at Sunny Scottsdale Condo on Facebook!

Annual P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & 1/2 Marathon Races

Comments Off on Annual P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & 1/2 Marathon Races Local Upcoming Events, Nearby Things To Do, Uncategorized

The annual P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & 1/2 Marathon races are already gearing up for another awesome experience. The event is a lot of fun for spectators and runners.

Our Sunny Scottsdale Condo Vacation Rental by Owner offers great access to the race route, but also is superb for avoiding the race route if you don’t want to be bothered. This can be really important since the race route takes up 26 miles of urban road throughout Tempe, Phoenix, and Scottsdale. Below follows a recent press release on the upcoming festivities.

The musically inspired P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & 1/2 Marathon races to Tempe, January 16, 2011. Runners and walkers from all levels and destinations are breaking in their sneakers to prepare for the flat and festive course that begins in downtown Phoenix, races through Scottsdale and finishes in Tempe on the Arizona State University campus.

More than 35,000 runners and walkers from around the world are expected to attend to participate in this popular event. In addition to the thousands of spectators on the sidelines cheering them on, runners are inspired at every mile with live music to keep the energy high from one mile to the next. Music of every genre can be heard along both the 26.2 and 13.1-mile courses. Reggae, jazz, country and rock will fill the streets for runners, walkers and spectators alike to enjoy.

The music doesn’t stop when the race does – an exciting post-race concert featuring a nationally recognized headliner is held immediately after the race and is free and open to the public. Held at Sun Angel Stadium at Arizona State University, participants and their friends and family are sure to have a rockin’ good time.

New this year, runners can participate in a two-person relay race for the 1/2 marathon. Runners will enjoy all the perks of the running the entire 1/2 marathon, such as the commemorative finisher’s medal, Brook’s technical participant tee and goodie bag, but with half the distance. Relay Teams are encouraged to have some fun during this event and wear costumes to get into the spirit.

Kids can also get into the running spirit at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Kids Rock Fun Run on Saturday, January 15. The one mile Fun Run takes place at Tempe Marketplace, an outdoor shopping area featuring 1.3 million square feet of retailers, dining and nightlife destinations.

The Health & Fitness Expo kicks off race weekend at the Phoenix Convention Center on Friday, January 14 and Saturday, January 15. At the expo, participants can pick up their race numbers and browse more than 100 vendors from the running and fitness industry.

Offering sunny skies and mild temperatures, it’s no surprise that more than half of all race participants come from outside of Arizona. After the race, many choose to extend their stay over the long weekend and turn their Tempe trip into a running vacation. Some of the most popular Tempe attractions and entertainment include hiking in Papago Park, browsing museums and galleries at Arizona State University, dining and nightlife in Tempe’s Mill Avenue District and shopping at Tempe Marketplace and Arizona Mills.

Waste Management (Phoenix) Open Raises 4.4 Million for Charities – What About Next Year?

Comments Off on Waste Management (Phoenix) Open Raises 4.4 Million for Charities – What About Next Year? Golf, Local Upcoming Events, Nearby Things To Do, Sight Seeing, Uncategorized

The Phoenix Open is one of  Scottsdale’s biggest annual events, drawing huge crowds and celebrities to enjoy “the greatest show on grass.” When in town for the Phoenix Open, many visitors prefer to stay on Scottsdale’s “resort row,”  the section of Scottsdale Road between Shea Blvd and Camelback Roads. Our sunny Scottsdale vacation rental condo is located in the middle of resort row!  Anyways, The Phoenix Open is a fantastic event, and it’s a fundraiser for the Thunderbirds’ charities. Recent news articles suggest that this past year they raised over $4.4 Million  for charities. The fundraising achievement is nothing to balk at, especially considering the major economic challenges and corporate pull backs in earlier 2010. Congrats to the Thunderbirds for another outstanding Phoenix Open, AKA Waste Management Open. We look forward to the 2011 Waste Management Open, and are going to be welcoming guests to our fantastic sunny Scottsdale vacation rental condo.

Scottsdale’s Soleri Bridge project is Underway

Comments Off on Scottsdale’s Soleri Bridge project is Underway Nearby Things To Do, Sight Seeing, Uncategorized

Scottsdale has done very well by continuing to invest in public art. This commitment continues to make Scottsdale a beautiful and interesting place for visitors and residents. The public arts project is clearly one of many factors making Scottsdale a top vacation destination. In 1985, the Arizona city of Scottsdale adopted a one percent for art ordinance and established the Scottsdale Public Art Program with the goal to enhance the quality of life afforded area residents and visitors. Scottsdale’s program and projects have won local, regional and national awards. Public art has taken many forms ranging from the walls of the Pima Freeway to James Turrell’s Skyspace at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. I am excited about the latest addition, and I know visitors to our Sunny Scottsdale Condo Vacation Rental will enjoy the new Soleri addition.
